Christopher Briggs Testifies Before Congress about the Harmful Effects of Obamacare
Testimony at Hearing on “Examining Pathways to Universal Health Coverage,” U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Reform

Posted: Wed. March 30, 2022, 3:21pm PT

Read the transcript.

The father of a little girl twice denied coverage for cancer under Obamacare mounted a riveting, moving opposition on Capitol Hill to House Democrats’ proposal to impose single-payer healthcare on the country.

On March 29, 2022, House Democrats of the Committee on Oversight and Reform held historic hearings under the title, “Examining Pathways to Universal Health Coverage.” Christopher B. Briggs, Publications and Public Affairs Counsel at the Independent Institute, was selected by the Republican minority as its lone patient witness.

“The most serious problem with Obamacare we faced was not high prices—as terrifying as those were,” said Briggs. “The most serious problem we faced was what those high prices mean in any government-controlled enterprise—that we’re on the path to scarcity, which we found out when our daughter was twice denied coverage for cancer under the Affordable Care Act (ACA).”

“But single payer,” continued Briggs, “won’t fix the problem. And here’s why. Bad ideas don’t get better just because you make them bigger. They get worse. Under single payer, my daughter will be everybody’s daughter. And millions of moms and dads will also watch the bureaucracies be unable to deliver life-saving care in time.”

The answer is to repeal the ACA and the restoration of actuarially sound insurance products curated to individual needs. “There is no other way,” said Briggs.
