David J. Theroux was a serious intellectual leader as well as an entrepreneur in the world of ideas. Having founded the Independent Institute when he was only 36, he dedicated his life to “boldly advancing peaceful, prosperous, and free societies grounded in a commitment to human worth and dignity.” Consistent with David’s vision, Independent adheres to the highest standards of independent, non-partisan, scholarly inquiry, and applies that independent thinking to issues that matter, creating transformational ideas for today’s most pressing social and economic challenges.

In his honor and memory, the Independent Institute is establishing the David J. Theroux Chair in Political Economy to be filled by an intellectual leader with a deep and energetic commitment to classical liberal principles, an ability to communicate and connect with others, and the drive to perpetuate and extend David’s vision through our research programs in the decades ahead.

Generous donors have provided seed funding for the Chair, and we are now seeking additional partners who want to share in ensuring the fidelity of Independent’s research programs to the ideals of the Institute.
