The DMV had 13 years to prepare for the federally mandated Read IDs needed by Californians, but they failed to prepare during that time so wait times escalated dramatically with 5-7 hour wait times not uncommon. A DMV data processor who was found to have slept on the job for over 2,000 hours but wasn't fired due to incompetent documentation. Private companies are better equipped to handle customer demands, says Sr. Fellow Lawrence McQuillan.
In California last year, there was a 50% increase in wait times for DMV services. Some customers wait for 5-7 hours to get their license renewed. Why? Incompetence. And also because there is no market discipline. There is no where else to go to get a driver's license or new Real ID required by federal law. Sr. Fellow Lawrence McQuiilan's recommendations for the DMV include private venders who are held to better standards through customer satisfaction.
