It is difficult for peasant societies to cope with economic modernization and industrialization—and for democracy to flourish during such transitions. Urbanization and industrialization in Russia help explain why the Bolsheviks were able to seize power. Later generations did not share these anxieties, which helps explain the demise of Bolshevism.
