Kevin R. C. Gutzman is a Research Fellow at the Independent Institute and a Professor of History at Western Connecticut State University. For the 2025-2026 year, Gutzman is leading a team of historians and writers creating for the Independent Institute an original collection of essays on the occasion of America’s 250th Anniversary. The essays will offer historically-grounded reflections on “Liberty at 250,” that is, the nation’s 250-year-old embrace of liberty. They will comprise a special Semiquincentennial supplement to the summer 2026 issue of Independent Institute’s quarterly journal of political economy, The Independent Review.
Kevin Gutzman received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Virginia; he also holds a master of public affairs from the LBJ School of Public Affairs of the University of Texas and a J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law.
Professor Gutzman is the author of the books, James Madison and the Making of America; The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Constitution; Virginia’s American Revolution: From Dominion to Republic, 1776-1840; and Who Killed the Constitution? The Federal Government vs. American Liberty from World War I to Barack Obama (with Thomas Woods). He has also edited new editions of John Taylor of Caroline’s Tyranny Unmasked and New Views of the Constitution of the United States.
He has contributed to 21 historical encyclopedias, and his articles have appeared in such scholarly journals as The Journal of American History, The Journal of Southern History, The Journal of the Early Republic, The Review of Politics, Modern Age, University Bookman, Publius: The Journal of Federalism, and The Journal of the Historical Society. His popular articles have been published in The American Conservative, National Review, Human Events, WorldNetDaily, Military History, Charleston Post and Courier, and TakiMag.com.
He has also appeared on over 100 radio programs, including syndicated shows such as the Michael Medved Show, Janet Parshall Show, Curtis Sliwa Show, and multiple programs on Air America, Sirius Satellite Radio’s Mike Church Show (including as guest host), as well as on C-SPAN 2’s Book TV, CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight, and The Glenn Beck Program.
