The widely-cited estimate that one in five female college students is a victim of sexual assault is based on surveys that can be very misleading because they suffer from self-selection bias, as they do not involve a random sample of students, and they define sexual assault very broadly. One this is clear, however, campus sexual assault is associated largely with alcohol consumption.
