Former Independent Institute Healthcare Expert John Graham Joins U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

OAKLAND, CA—Healthcare policy expert John R. Graham, who until March 28 was Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute, has been appointed to a key leadership position in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), it was announced this week.

In his new role as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, Graham will advise HHS Secretary Tom Price, MD, on “policy development in health, disability, human services, data, and science” and provide “advice and analysis on economic policy,” according to the department’s website.

“The Independent Institute is delighted that our extremely capable, former colleague John R. Graham has been appointed to help shape federal policies on issues that touch so many lives,” said Independent Institute President David J. Theroux.

“With his extensive expertise and energy, John has been a tremendous asset to the Independent Institute’s campaign to improve public debate over healthcare policy with market-based reforms to benefit patients and enable care givers. We look forward to his new leadership in bringing his knowledge and enthusiasm into transformative actions that will directly benefit millions of Americans.”

In his former position as Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute, Graham wrote 105 op-eds and 341 blog posts at The Beacon, and spoke at numerous events and on many TV and radio programs, emphasizing themes such as the need for more individual choice in healthcare policy, the negative impact of harmful government regulations on healthcare costs and innovation, and the failures of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).

Through its Center on Health and the Environment, the Independent Institute has published books and studies on healthcare policy such as A Better Choice: Healthcare Solutions for America and Priceless: Curing the Healthcare Crisis, both by John C. Goodman; Replacing Obamacare and Insuring the Uninsured, by John C. Goodman, Rep. Pete Sessions, and Sen. Bill Cassidy; and American Health Care, edited by Roger D. Feldman. Its additional website FDAReview.org is a scholarly resource examining the human cost of U.S. Food and Drug Administration policies and the reforms needed to resolve such problems.

The Independent Institute is a non-profit, research and educational organization that promotes the power of independent thinking to boldly advance peaceful, prosperous, and free societies grounded in a commitment to human worth and dignity.
