The sports world is dizzy with excitement over one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history: fifteenth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast University beat mighty (and second-seeded) Georgetown in the first round of the NCAA tournament. You probably know that FGCU is this year’s version of Cinderella. You may not know that FGCU also has an excellent economics department.

Specifically, Florida Gulf Coast University has an economics department that takes free markets seriously. This isn’t a motley collection of ideologues who are indifferent to the suffering of the poor or who naively believe that free markets create nirvana.
