Development Director

The Independent Institute is currently seeking an experienced Development professional with a strong commitment to individual liberty to head up its Development Department.

The Development Director has responsibility for establishing, maintaining and developing relationships with donors. Strategies utilized include major gifts, planned giving, annual campaigns, educational events, direct mail and Web-based efforts. As such, the qualified candidate will be a self-motivated, committed professional with successful fund-raising experience to assist us in our continued growth.

Excellent verbal, written, organizational, and interpersonal skills are required, as well as a demonstrated track record in planning, organizing, coordinating, and implementing successful development programs, including direct mail, special events, annual solicitation, major gifts/planned giving and donor management.

For twenty-five years, the Independent Institute has advanced an understanding of free-markets, individual liberty and government reform through its scholarly research and publications. As a 501(c)3 educational nonprofit organization, the Institute receives its funding entirely from private sources and does not conduct research on a contract basis.

Requirements

Only those candidates meeting the following minimum requirements will be considered:

  • Four years of development or fundraising experience at a nonprofit organization
  • Personal experience developing relationships with individual donors
  • Experience writing appeals for financial gifts, such as direct mail letters, foundation grant requests and personal letters to donors
  • Personal commitment to free-market principles and individual liberty

Development Assistant

The rapidly growing Independent Institute, a public policy think tank in Oakland has an immediate opening for a Development Assistant. The ideal candidate will have excellent administrative and customer service skills, and be a real team player with the ability to multi-task. Responsibilities will include:

  • Answering main telephone line
  • Administrative support to the development department and rest of the organization
  • Customer Service (order taking, order entry, answering customer inquiries)
  • Maintaining and updating the donor database as needed, including processing donations
  • Tracking and communication with new and prospective donor/members
  • Making follow-up phone calls to members and event attendees.
  • Basic office functions (distributing mail, processing order payments, filing, database entry, composing and typing routine correspondence)

Requirements

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, organizational ability and attention to detail
  • Understand and perform standard computer operations, using appropriate software packages
  • Operate standard office equipment
  • Type 45-50 words per minute
  • Understand and employ modern office procedures and methods

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m.
