Richard T. Ely
Paladin of the Welfare-Warfare State
The influence of economist Richard T. Ely extends far beyond the American Economic Association, which he founded in 1885 as a progressive alternative to the laissez-faire leaning Political Economy Club. Through the activist Social Gospel movement, Ely transplanted the collectivist ideas of Bismarcks Germany to American soil.
