Research Fellow and Economist, William Shughart, to join Utah State University

June 22, 2011—The Independent Institute’s Senior Fellow, William F. Shughart II, will move from the University of Mississippi where he has recently retired to join the Utah State University faculty in the coming school year to become the J. Fish Smith Professor in Public Choice. Dean Douglas D. Anderson has announced that he has accepted an invitation to the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business as a professor in the Economics and Finance Department.�

William Shughart has published more than 200 scholarly articles, book chapters and reviews, and is listed among the top five percent of authors at IDEAS—the largest bibliographic database dedicated to economics.

�“We are so excited to bring Bill Shughart to Utah State University,” Anderson said. “He is not only a world-renowned researcher, but a truly gifted teacher and mentor who will be a boon for our students and faculty members.”

�In addition to his work at the Independent Institute, Professor Shughart is Editor-in-Chief of�Public Choice�and his many books include Taxing Choice: The Predatory Politics of Fiscal Discrimination The Political Economy of the New Deal, and The Elgar Companion to Public Choice: The Organization of Industry. Having retired as the Frederick A. P. Barnard Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of Mississippi, he is also President of the Southern Economic Association.

�A contributor to numerous other books, Professor Shughart is the author of more than 100 articles for scholarly journals. His popular articles have also appeared in the�Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Oklahoman, San Francisco Chronicle, Investor’s Business Daily, San Jose Mercury News, Philadelphia Inquirer, San Francisco Examiner, Kansas City Star, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Washington Times, Detroit Free Press, Clarion-Ledger, Vision Hispana, National Post, Providence Journal, and many other publications.
