California’s Proposed Wealth Tax – Public Panel and Reception

Please join Independent Institute for an evening reception and panel discussion examining California’s tax on the wealth of billionaires residing in the state.

The latest Independent Institute Reset Report evaluates the arguments behind the proposed wealth tax and finds that the case for the measure is not supported by the available evidence. The report challenges claims that billionaires systematically pay lower tax rates than ordinary Americans, arguing that those conclusions rely on unconventional methods that differ from standard economic analysis. When measured using more widely accepted approaches, the evidence does not show a tax system that disproportionately favors the wealthy.

The panel will feature Joshua D. Rauh, Ormond Family Professor of Finance at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Senior Fellow; Kristian Fors, Research Fellow at Independent Institute; and Phil Magness, Senior Fellow at the Independent Institute and the David J. Theroux Chair in Political Economy as the moderator. Together, they will discuss the economic, legal, and policy implications of California’s proposed wealth tax and what the measure could mean for the state’s future.
