Butler D. Shaffer

Butler D. Shaffer (1935–2019) was the Irwin R. Buchalter Professor Emeritus of Law at Southwestern University School of Law. He received his J.D. from the University of Chicago.

His books include Calculated Chaos: Institutional Threats to Peace and Human Survival, Boundaries of Order: Private Property as a Social System, The Wizards of Ozymandias: Reflections on the Decline and Fall, A Libertarian Critique of Intellectual Property, and In Restraint of Trade: The Business Campaign Against Competition, 1918-1938. His scholarly articles have been published in the Journal of Private Enterprise, University of Miami Law Review, Business & Society,The Independent Review, and Southwestern University Law Review, and his popular articles have appeared in the Los Angeles Daily Journal.

He was the recipient of the Gary G. Schlarbaum Prize for Lifetime Defense of Liberty.
