About the Role

Independent Institute is seeking a full-time Housing and Homelessness Research Fellow to perform original and innovative research. This individual will report to the Director of the Center on Entrepreneurial Innovation (COEI), which houses Independent’s housing and homelessness research program.

The ideal candidate will have an M.A. or Ph.D. in economics, political science, history, or a related field with 2-4 years of research experience focused on housing, homelessness, and/or urban policy. It’s imperative they understand research publications that involve statistical/econometric analysis and be able to communicate complex issues to the public and media. Working in Oakland or Sacramento, California, is preferred, but superior candidates who want to work remotely will be considered.


  1. Perform original and innovative research
  2. Write persuasive commentaries, reports, briefings, journal articles, and books
  3. Help create videos
  4. Conduct literature reviews
  5. Help curate a website
  6. Conduct media interviews
  7. Engage in civic outreach and participate in conferences
  8. Public policy issue areas might include: housing, homelessness, Housing First, harm reduction, mental illness, substance abuse, urban decay and revitalization, and successful private alternatives to government approaches at the local, state, regional, and national levels.


  1. An M.A. in economics, political science, history, or related fields. Candidates with a Ph.D. in any of those fields will also be considered, but it is not required.
  2. 2-4 years of research experience focused on housing, homelessness, and/or urban policy issues with a track record of publications and accomplishments is preferred but not required.
  3. Ability to understand research publications that involve statistical/econometric analysis.
  4. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  5. Capable of persuasively communicating complex issues to the public and media.
  6. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  7. Aligned with Independent Institute’s mission.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range: 75-95k
