Position Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications is an integral member of our leadership team who will spearhead the overall marketing efforts for our organization. The individual will contribute to the development and implementation of the Independent’s strategic plan and own the Marketing department’s plan that aligns with the overarching strategy.
Highlight of Responsibilities:
With a mix of strategy and execution, the Director will lead a team that will drive all aspects of our marketing and communications needs to achieve company goals. This role requires a strategic thinker who can also roll up their sleeves in the execution of both digital and traditional marketing tactics. Major operational responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Develop and execute marketing plans and activities that align to the company’s goals and objectives
- Drive innovative campaigns and programming that strengthen brand awareness
- Design and implement public relations programs that positively promote Independent’s books, journal, programs, and events
- Develop and refine messaging and positioning that aligns and attracts key audiences
- Drive compelling stories that showcase the company’s mission and insights
- Spearhead corporate communications that engage internal and external audiences
- Plan and oversee the execution of all digital marketing, including SEO/SEM, email, retargeting, and display advertising campaigns
- Develop campaigns and programming that reach new audiences in new ways
- Write compelling content, press releases, and thought leadership that elevate and differentiate our mission
- Understand and define KPIs that track marketing performance and regularly report on marketing outcomes
Competencies and requirements:
- A strong alignment with the ideas animating the Independent Institute
- 7-10+ years of experience managing marketing
- Experience with publication marketing is a plus
- Strong communication, project management and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of market trends and how they translate into opportunities for growth
- High emotional intelligence
- Ability and proven experience managing, mentoring and motivating a hybrid and/or remote team
- Hands-on experience working with marketing automation tools a must (such as Pardot, HubSpot, Mailchimp, Sprout Social, etc.)
- Regularly utilize data analytics to track, analyze, and draw insights from marketing activity metrics to make informed recommendations
- Flawless writing skills and organizational abilities
- Ability to work cross-functionally across departments
- Appropriate educational credentials are a plus (e.g., B.A. and/or M.A. in digital marketing, policy, economics, or the humanities)

Compensation range: $115,000 - $135,000
