The Market for Force
By Bruce L. Benson
This article appeared in the Winter 2007 issue of The Independent Review

Deborah D. Avant examines the consequences of the private provision of military services, as well as private security for international corporations and nongovernmental organizations, in The Market for Force: The Consequences of Privatizing Security (2005). Although Avant’s application of “new institutional” theories from both sociology and economics is questionable, her descriptions and analysis of private security around the world are informative and insightful.
