Mechanisms of Liberal Bias in the News Media versus the Academy

Abstract

Some researchers have charged that the news industry and academia possess a left-liberal bias, but is there reason to believe that one is more biased than the other? A comparison of the media’s and the academy’s institutions and incentives suggests that academia is more conducive to supporting and sustaining bias.
