Friedrich Hayek’s economic and social thought is systematically reassessed in Bruce Caldwell’s demanding new book Hayek’s Challenge: An Intellectual Biography of F. A. Hayek (2004). Although Caldwell explains insightfully the development of the Nobel Laureate’s substantive work, his claims about the transformation of Hayek’s methodological commitments raise questions.
