Liberalism and the Common Good: A Hayekian Perspective on Communitarianism
By Linda C. Raeder
This article appeared in the Spring 1998 issue of The Independent Review

Abstract

The recent attack on modern liberalism by “communitarianism” has caught the attention of many political theorists. The insights of F. A. Hayek prove especially helpful in understanding what is at stake in the communitarian/liberal debate. Hayek’s classical liberalism scarcely resembles the rationalistic, rights-based claims of modern liberalism and is at least partly sympathetic to communitarianism’s vision of the good society.
