The influence of economist Richard T. Ely extends far beyond the American Economic Association, which he founded in 1885 as a progressive alternative to the laissez-faire leaning Political Economy Club. Through the activist Social Gospel movement, Ely transplanted the collectivist ideas of Bismarck’s Germany to American soil.

Murray N. Rothbard (1926–1995) was the S. J. Hall Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Vice President of the Ludwig von Mises Institute, and Research Fellow and founding Member of the Board of Advisors for the Independent Institute.
