Is the Concept of Race Illegitimate?

Several noted social scientists have argued that race is an illegitimate concept and can only foster racism and related evils. The everyday concept of race is too crude to serve molecular biologists and government policymakers well, but does it follow that race is a completely arbitrary and meaningless concept that necessarily impedes justice and social harmony?
