C-SPAN’s Book TV to Feature the Independent Institute’s Evening on Civil Liberties and Security in an Age of Terrorism, July 18th

OAKLAND, Calif., July 10, 2013— Could the eye-opening reports on the government’s accessing all phone and electronic communications along with the reaction to the Boston Bombing be setting into motion a chain of events of ominous significance? Should Americans be more concerned about Security or Liberty?

You are cordially invited to join us for a special evening, to be featured by C-SPAN’s Book TV and in association with our Challenge of Liberty Summer Seminars, as we discuss these timely issues. Moderated by Senior Vice President Mary Theroux, the program will feature Independent Institute fellows Robert Higgs and Anthony Gregory to discuss the eye-opening revelations of systematic government spying on the entire citizenry including NSA accessing all phone and electronic communications, USPS photocopying the exterior of all mail, and the dangers posed to liberty and security by these and other such unchecked and unconstitutional powers.

Robert Higgs

Robert Higgs is Senior Fellow in Political Economy at The Independent Institute, Editor at Large of The Independent Review and author of Crisis and Leviathan, Delusions of Power, Neither Liberty nor Safety, and other books. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Gary Schlarbaum Award for Lifetime Defense of Liberty, Thomas Szasz Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Cause of Civil Liberties, Lysander Spooner Award for Advancing the Literature of Liberty, Friedrich von Wieser Memorial Prize for Excellence in Economic Education, and Templeton Honor Rolls Award on Education in a Free Society.

Anthony Gregory is Research Fellow, Director of Student Programs, and author of the new book The Power of Habeas Corpus in America: From the King’s Prerogative to the War on Terror (Cambridge University Press for The Independent Institute). He has written articles for The Atlantic, Washington Times, Bloomberg Business Week, Christian Science Monitor, San Diego Union Tribune, Dallas Morning News, Huffington Post, American Conservative, and Human Events, among many others. He earned his B.A. in American history at the University of California at Berkeley.
