Gary M. Galles

Gary M. Galles is a Research Fellow at the Independent Institute and a professor of economics at Pepperdine University, where he has taught for more than 30 years. He is also an adjunct scholar at the Ludwig von Mises Institute and has conducted research for the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. He has testified before several committees in the California legislature and has made many appearances on radio, television, and online media.

Professor Galles specializes in public finance, public choice (better termed “the economics of government”), and industrial organization, but his greatest passion is to educate the public about liberty and the misleading premises that shape public policy.

His books include Pathways to Policy Failures (2020), Lines of Liberty (2015), Faulty Premises, Faulty Policies (2014), and Apostle of Peace (2013). His scholarly articles have appeared in The American Economist, Journal of Libertarian Studies, Journal of Economics and Finance Education, American Journal of Economics and Sociology, Atlantic Economic Review, and Journal of Social, Political and Economic Studies. He has also authored more than eleven hundred articles for general audiences, in periodicals such the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Times, Investor’s Business Daily, Journal of Commerce, Conservative Review, Chronicle of Higher Education, Orange County Register, San Diego Union-Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Daily Journal, Los Angeles Daily News, Sacramento Bee, Capitol Weekly, Philadelphia Inquirer, The Freeman, California Political Review, and more than three dozen other outlets. He has also written numerous book reviews and worked in textbook development for more than 20 years. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
